Smarter Parking Sensors Make Cities Safer as Well as Less Congested

Smart parking innovations are reshaping urban mobility by integrating advanced sensor technology into city infrastructure to reduce traffic congestion and enhance road safety . By providing real-time data on space availability, these systems minimize the time drivers spend searching for parking, thereby reducing distractions and protecting vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.

Parking is rarely the first topic that comes to mind when discussing road safety, yet the time drivers spend searching for an available space has a measurable impact on both traffic flow and the safety of vulnerable road users. Every unnecessary lap around a city block increases congestion while diverting drivers' attention from pedestrians, cyclists and surrounding traffic. A new smart parking sensor developed by Portuguese company Sernis demonstrates how digital infrastructure can help tackle this overlooked challenge.

The new ground-mounted sensor combines microwave radar with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to verify whether a parking space is genuinely occupied rather than relying on a single detection method. This dual-technology approach is designed to reduce false occupancy reports, providing drivers with more reliable real-time parking information. High-quality parking data is essential because inaccurate information quickly erodes trust, leading drivers to ignore guidance systems and resume searching manually.

For transport professionals, the story is about much more than a single sensor. Reliable parking occupancy data is becoming an important component of smart city ecosystems, supporting navigation services, traffic management centres and digital mobility platforms. Reducing the time spent looking for parking can decrease unnecessary vehicle kilometres, improve traffic circulation and lower emissions in busy urban areas. In cities that are introducing low-emission zones or reallocating street space, accurate parking data can also help authorities manage kerb space more effectively.

From a European perspective, intelligent parking systems fit naturally into broader digitalisation efforts that seek to make transport infrastructure more connected and data-driven. Rather than viewing parking as a standalone service, cities are increasingly integrating it with wider ITS platforms to improve operational efficiency and enhance the overall urban mobility experience.
