Reliable real-time information is becoming a defining moment in the public transport journey

To bridge the operational gap between published schedules and real-world street conditions, the Optibus Real-Time Suite utilizes existing CAD/AVL feeds to deliver accurate ETA predictions, rapid detour detection, and streamlined compliance reporting without requiring new hardware.

For public transport passengers, confidence in a service often comes down to a few critical moments: knowing when the next bus will arrive, understanding whether a connection is still possible and finding out what to do when a disruption occurs. These interactions can shape whether people se public transport as a dependable alternative to travelling by car.

An Optibus article explores this challenge through the idea of the “moment of truth”—the point at which the information passengers receive must match what is actually happening on the network.

The article identifies three areas where real-time intelligence can improve public transport:
.
1. Passenger trust. Estimated arrival times calculated from raw GPS positions alone can become inaccurate, particularly as a vehicle approaches a stop. Combining live location data with scheduled times and historical running-time context can produce more useful predictions, helping passengers make better decisions about waiting and connections.

2. Operational response. Disruptions such as road closures, vehicle faults or accessibility problems can require several teams to coordinate. If operators must discover incidents through phone calls and manually update separate systems, the response can be slow. Automatic detour detection and centralised passenger alerts can help dispatchers identify problems sooner and communicate changes more consistently.

3. Compliance and accountability. Transport authorities need evidence of whether services ran as planned, including on-time performance (OTP) and ridership figures. A centralised record of operational events can simplify reporting and provide an audit trail when figures are questioned, rather than requiring teams to reconstruct events from separate spreadsheets.

Optibus presents its Real-Time Suite as a way to connect these functions within its existing planning and operations platform. It uses schedule data in GTFS format alongside real-time GTFS-RT feeds from computer-aided dispatch and automatic vehicle location (CAD/AVL) systems. The company says the suite can publish ETA predictions in under 10 seconds, detect detours automatically within minutes and centralise passenger alerts and reporting—without installing new onboard hardware.

The wider lesson is that better public transport information does not necessarily require more sensors or more data collection. Many operators already generate vehicle-location data, but its value is limited when it remains disconnected from schedules, passenger communication and operational decisions.

For transport authorities, the opportunity is to connect planning with day-to-day operations so that published information reflects the service passengers actually experience. This can strengthen passenger confidence while giving dispatchers and managers a clearer picture of performance.
