Next-Generation eCall Testing Is Strengthening Emergency Communications for Connected Vehicles

Keysight’s new hybrid eCall certification ensures reliable emergency communication for connected vehicles during the transition to 5G . This solution allows manufacturers to verify that life-saving systems remain compliant and interoperable as older mobile networks are phased out across Europe.

As vehicles become increasingly connected, their ability to communicate during emergencies is becoming just as important as their ability to prevent accidents. Europe's eCall system has already demonstrated how automatic emergency notifications can reduce response times after serious collisions. With mobile networks evolving towards 5G, however, the underlying communication technologies must also adapt. Keysight's latest hybrid eCall certification solution represents another step in preparing connected vehicles for this transition.

Hybrid eCall combines traditional satellite-based positioning with modern mobile communication technologies, enabling vehicles to automatically transmit their location and other essential information to emergency services following a serious crash. The new certification platform allows automotive manufacturers and suppliers to verify that these systems comply with current standards while ensuring interoperability across different mobile network technologies. As older communication networks are gradually phased out, robust testing will be essential to guarantee that emergency services continue to function reliably regardless of the communication infrastructure available.

For transport professionals, the development highlights the growing importance of validation and certification in connected mobility. Advanced vehicle technologies are only as effective as the reliability of the systems that support them. Comprehensive testing ensures that emergency communication systems perform consistently under a wide range of real-world conditions, reducing the risk of failures when they are needed most.

The announcement is particularly relevant in Europe, where eCall has been mandatory for new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles for several years. As telecommunications infrastructure continues to evolve, ensuring compatibility with next-generation networks will become an increasingly important aspect of vehicle development and regulatory compliance. This transition also illustrates the close relationship between the automotive and telecommunications sectors in shaping the future of intelligent transport systems.

As vehicles become more connected and software-driven, reliable emergency communication will remain one of the most valuable safety features they offer. Continued investment in testing and certification helps ensure that technological progress translates into tangible benefits when every second counts.
