Boca Raton Is Adding Autonomous Shuttles to Its Downtown Mobility Network

The City of Boca Raton, Florida, has introduced MiCa—a fully electric, eight-seat autonomous shuttle developed by Auve Tech—into its downtown mobility network.

Autonomous public transport is increasingly being introduced not as a replacement for conventional buses, but as a way of filling smaller gaps in urban mobility networks. In Boca Raton, Florida, the city has launched MiCa, a fully electric autonomous shuttle operating on a short loop through Mizner Park. The fare-free service connects restaurants, shops and cultural venues and is intended to complement the city's existing electric shuttle services.

MiCa was developed by Estonian company Auve Tech and has been introduced through a collaboration between the City of Boca Raton, Auve Tech, Circuit and Guident. The eight-seat vehicle is limited to 25 km/h and has a 17.6 kWh battery, allowing up to 20 hours of daily operation with 22 kW AC charging. Its compact dimensions are well suited to short urban journeys where a conventional full-size bus may not be necessary.

From a technology perspective, the shuttle combines seven lidar sensors with multiple cameras to provide 360-degree perception. Its critical systems are designed with redundancy to reduce the consequences of individual failures, while cybersecurity has also been considered as part of the vehicle's design. MiCa includes teleoperation and remote monitoring capabilities, allowing human operators to supervise the vehicle and intervene when necessary.

The initial route is deliberately short and predictable, which makes sense for introducing autonomous transport into a real urban environment. At the same time, the city is considering extending the service into a 2.6-mile corridor connecting Mizner Park with Royal Palm Place. Such an expansion would give the shuttle a more significant role as a downtown connector rather than simply a demonstration service.

What I find particularly interesting is how the autonomous shuttle is being integrated into an existing mobility ecosystem. Circuit already operates electric shuttles and on-demand services in Boca Raton, meaning autonomous transport is being added to an established network rather than introduced in isolation. This could provide a useful model for cities considering where automation can genuinely add value.

Short autonomous routes may not seem as transformative as fully autonomous vehicles operating throughout an entire city, but they could be an important practical step. By starting with predictable journeys and gradually expanding the operating area, cities can gain experience with technology, regulation, passenger acceptance and remote supervision while building towards more integrated autonomous public transport.
